The Coleman Co. Inc. has renewed the lease for its 1.1 million-square-foot distribution center in Gardner — one of the largest industrial facilities in the Midwest.

Located at 17150 Mercury St., near 175th Street and Interstate 35, the facility was built in 2009 for a Coleman workforce including 160 full-time employees. It covers 25 acres — that’s enough room for 20 football fields.

Developed as part of Midwest Commerce Center, the distribution center features a single-story tilt-up structure, 32-foot clear height ceilings, 100 dock doors and parking for 300 trailers. Construction of the $35 million facility consumed 3,000 truckloads of concrete for the exterior and another 3,000 truckloads for the interior.

“The facility represents one of the largest industrial distribution buildings in the Midwest, and the retention of the tenant is another indication of Kansas City’s strategic industrial location,” John Hassler, a managing director with Newmark Grubb Zimmer, said in a release.

Hassler and Mark Long, Newmark Grubb Zimmer’s executive managing director, represented the owner of the facility, Gramercy Property Trust Inc., in the transaction. The terms of the renewal were not disclosed.

The Coleman facility, which officially opened in April 2010, is located near a railhead that the Wichita-based outdoor-gear giant uses for distribution of imported products. The opening of the facility allowed Coleman to consolidate several of its previous distribution operations.
